Effect of D-Penicillamine and Sodium EDTA on the Lead Content in the Urine

Abstract
Lead acetate solution (Pb2mg/ml) was intraperitoneally injected to male rats with Average body weight of 200 g, and the contents of -lead in the urine collected for every 24 hours _were determined. D -penicillamine (l0mg/3ml) and sodium-EDTA (20mg/3ml) as detoxicants were orally administered every 24 hours after lead acetate administration.
Lead contents in the urine were measured using dithizone method to extract lead and UV-spectrophotometry. Lead contents in the urine were significantly increased by both detoxicants, and this indicates that the two detoxicants exihibit significant detoxicating effects of lead poisoning. Sodium-EDTA as a lead detoxicant was superior to D-penicillamine a:id the detoxicating effect of them was the highest after 5 days of detoxicant administration.
